Grid connection consultants for wind

Most onshore wind capacity in the UK is in Scotland, where the transmission network starts at 132 kV. That means relatively small distribution-connected wind projects in Scotland can still need assessment for their impact on the transmission system.

§01Context

Connecting wind in the UK

Consultancies in this category cover transmission applications through NESO, distribution applications, power systems studies and offer review.

Current regulatory issues

  • Repowering existing sites can make use of existing connection capacity, subject to agreement.
  • Transmission reinforcement programmes in Scotland affect connection dates for many projects.

§03Questions

Wind: common questions

Q01Why do small Scottish wind farms need transmission assessments?

In Scotland the transmission network includes 132 kV, so the distribution network is closer to the transmission boundary. Embedded projects can therefore affect the transmission system and may need assessment before connection.

Q02Does repowering a wind farm need a new grid connection?

Not always. If the repowered site stays within its existing capacity and technical parameters, the existing agreement may be modified rather than replaced. Increases in capacity usually need a new application.

Q03Who applies for a transmission connection?

In Great Britain, applications for transmission connections are made to NESO, which coordinates with the relevant transmission owner.
