Grid connection consultants for solar PV

Solar connections range from rooftop systems under G98 to large ground-mounted farms connected at 132 kV or to the transmission network. For larger schemes, the grid connection is often the factor that decides whether a site is viable.

Typical size
Under 1 MW (commercial rooftop) to 100 MW+ (utility scale)
Typical voltage
Low voltage to 132 kV; transmission for the largest farms
Technical standard
G98 / G99, with G100 for export limitation
Timeline
Smaller distribution connections can be quicker; larger schemes depend on Gate 2
§01Context

Connecting solar pv in the UK

Consultancies in this category handle feasibility, G99 applications, export limitation design, offer review and co-location with storage.

Current regulatory issues

  • Larger solar farms are subject to connections reform readiness and alignment tests.
  • Planning consent route depends on scheme size; very large schemes may fall under the nationally significant infrastructure regime.

§03Questions

Solar PV: common questions

Q01What is the difference between G98 and G99 for solar?

G98 covers small type-tested installations, typically up to 16A per phase, and uses a simple connect-and-notify process. Anything larger falls under G99, which requires an application and approval before connection.

Q02Can I connect more solar than the export capacity I have been offered?

Often, yes, by using an export limitation scheme under G100 or by adding on-site storage. The network operator must approve the scheme.

Q03Who decides where a solar farm connects?

The network operator identifies the point of connection in its offer, based on available capacity. A consultant can test alternatives before you apply.
