Grid connection consultants for data centres

Data centres are large, continuous electricity demand connections. Capacity is the deciding factor in where they can be built, and in several parts of the UK, notably west London, available demand capacity has become the main constraint on new sites.

Typical size
5 MW (edge) to 300 MW+ (hyperscale campus)
Typical voltage
33 kV to 132 kV; transmission (275–400 kV) for the largest campuses

DNO demand connection, or directly connected demand via NESO
Timeline
Highly location-dependent; constrained areas have seen dates quoted many years out
§01Context

Connecting data centres in the UK

Consultancies in this category help with site screening against network capacity, demand applications to the DNO or NESO, offer review, and options such as phased capacity, on-site generation or flexible connections.

Current regulatory issues

  • Directly connected demand falls within the scope of GB connections reform and Gate 2 readiness requirements.
  • Ofgem has consulted on a commitment fee for large demand projects, including data centres, intended to discourage speculative applications.
  • Government AI Growth Zones may change how capacity is prioritised in designated areas.

§03Questions

Data centres: common questions

Q01How much grid capacity does a data centre need?

It depends on IT load and cooling. Edge facilities may need a few megawatts, while hyperscale campuses commonly plan for hundreds of megawatts delivered in phases. A consultant can help size an initial and ultimate capacity request so you do not over- or under-apply.

Q02Should a data centre connect to the DNO or to the transmission network?

Smaller sites usually connect to the distribution network at 33 kV or 132 kV. Very large campuses may need a direct transmission connection, which is applied for through NESO. The right route depends on capacity, location and the nearest point of connection with headroom.

Q03Can a data centre get an earlier connection date?

Sometimes. Options include phased capacity, accepting a flexible or interruptible connection, on-site generation or storage, or choosing a site near spare capacity. A connection offer review will show which of these are realistic for a given site.
